We are having many of our clients consider investments outside the realm of stocks, bonds and cash - that is, areas that would be expected to do well in an inflationary environment. One example would be "real assets." This would include things such as energy, industrial metals, precious metals and other natural resources. Where was the place to be in the 1970s and early 1980s? - Oil, gold, silver, real estate and other hard assets. Why? These types of assets rose with inflation. On the more conservative side one may consider Treasury Inflation Protected Securities [TIPS] and other alternative fixed-income vehicles. There are various other strategies that would be well worth considering in order to prepare for an inflationary environment.
